7/22/2010 Jim Halbur: This is Jim Halbur at Halbur. I wanted to let you know that we are looking at some different projects and engineers. ISU has been monitoring a system northeast of Ames along I-35. Joe Halbur was going to send you some information. My boys are looking at it. I was wondering if, once I get the system, that would qualify. They are using a filtering system through tiles rather a pond and irrigation. ISU is monitoring it. They have 6 or 8 monitoring wells and say that the water on the bottom end is better than the top end. Dan Olson: Who is your engineer? Jim Halbur: They're still choosing one. It sounds promising. Dan Olson: Is this the feedlot Alison was at last year? Jim Halbur: Yes. Last fall. Dan Olson: Does ISU own the feedlot with the system you are looking at? Jim Halbur: No, its privately owned, but ISU is involved with monitoring the project. Dan Olson: Tell me how it works again. Jim Halbur: They have round bales set on end to filter solids. After it goes through the bales, it goes to a SSB like you guys talk about, but the SSB is used as a holding bin. From there it drains to a level vegetated 50 x 100 basin with tile lines below it. The tiles drain to a septic tank and the septic tank is pumped to another area with grass vegetation. We think it would be better than putting in a pond and irrigation equipment. Dan Olson: But you are planning on staying below 1000? Jim Halbur: We will not expand. In our letter, we explained that we changed our lots alot already. We shorted some up. We're all on concrete. All our grates are down to 1/2 inch, which doesn't let much water out. We hauled 12,000 gallons of water to a neighbor's pasture after a 2 inch rain. Dan Olson: I'll pass this info along to Alison, since she is working with you. If you decide you want to go this route after your boys get a chance to see it, let us know and we will look into it. I'd appreciated if you could let us know the name of the site or the owner and the contact at ISU who is working with that project. Jim Halbur: We would need more than one because of drainage in different directions. We also would not want to overwork the system. Thad has been here also. He said if we would seed down the area in the bottom it would work but we want to do more. It is scheduled to get seeded in August whether we go with this system or not. DAN OLSON
