7/20/2010 On Tuesday November 21 2006 I participated in a conference call involving DNR and ISU extension staff as well as representatives of the Jim Gregory Feedlot. Reza Khosravi Gene Tinker Cyrus Rustin Shawn Shouse Mike Gannon Carl Peterson Robert Burns Jim Gregory and John George participated in the call. The purpose of the call was to discuss and address the difficulties encountered in obtaining samples and flow data to evaluate the performance of the Vegetative Treatment Area (VTA) at the Jim Gregory Feedlot – South Site (63404) in Fremont County. Per the discussion during that call:The flume above the settling bench and VTA at the referenced facility is acting as a solids settling structure and affecting the function of the designed manure control system. The solids that are accumulating in the flume and in the area behind the flume are affecting the performance of the flume and sampling equipment as well as the integrity of data that will be used to evaluate the performance of the settling bench and VTA. The flume is also affecting the performance of the settling bench by concentrating flow from the feedlot onto the settling bench to a discreet point. John George will develop and propose methods to address the noted problems. Such methods might include moving the flume up gradient where the grade is steeper and there would be more energy to carry the solids through the flume changing the shape of the flume and designing the approach to flume to concentrate the flow of effluent gradually with no discreet constricting points. The flume below the VTA is functioning satisfactorily as the solids have been removed from the flow by that point. John George Shawn Shouse Robert Burns and Jim Gregory will meet at the facility on November 27 2006 to obtain elevation measurements and discuss possible alternatives. AfoLOADInsp-2-07/20/2010
