3/4/2010 On Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 4:53 PM I received a phone mail message from David Alexander that they had a manure spill next to the confinement building that afternoon. I called David Alexander at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. David explained that they were filling a semi tanker to transfer manure from one pit to another and they discovered a small leak in the tanker near the bottom of the tank. They pumped all but about 500 gallons from the tanker into a manure application tank (tank pulled behind a tractor to apply manure) and the leak stopped. The semi tanker was moved next to the confinement building and later in the day about 4:30 PM they noticed that the remaining contents of the tanker had leaked onto the ground. They used some snow to absorb the manure and called to report the spill and for instructions on how to handle the material. I told David to scoop up the snow and any affected soil and land apply it onto a crop field. David said there was a field just east of the confinement where they could land apply the snow and soil. I put a spill into the database 030210-wdg-1653. I also sent David Alexander (via e-mail) instructions on how to fill out the written spill report. BILL GIBBONS
