If more calls come in to FO5...DMWW reported a significant number of dead geese (hundreds) on Maffitt Reservoir. They've already been in touch with DNR wildlife staff, but they had no working knowledge of the virus's impact on drinking water sources. Maffitt Reservoir is not currently in use, but Crystal Lake is (2-3 found there). Avian flu is not confirmed but a carcass is being delivered to the Iowa DNR today for testing. The document Adam provided contains quite a bit of information about impacts on drinking water and inactivation of the virus. From the WHO doc..."Due to their structure, all influenza viruses are relatively susceptible to disinfectants, including oxidizing agents such as chlorine."
