2/27/2025 Hello FO4 Wastewater Team, I spoke to Eric Cherko, Operator-by-Affidavit @ Sapp Bros. Travel Center near Percival, Iowa. He has been having grease issues and recently had a very high BOD loading on his most recent grab sample. There are suspicions that it may be coming from Wendy's (fast food restaurant), however he is still investigating and needs our help. I have a routine inspection scheduled for March 13th if Kristi or Dan would be available to assist in the grease investigation. Wendy's (Wittrock) April 2020 inspection report is attached. He states that there is a "can" from the force mains, whereby the wastewater is then gravity fed to the lagoon system. This is where grease has been accumulating. Eyman plumbing is on a schedule to jet the mains twice a year. While investigating at Wendy's it was apparent to Eric that they are not very familiar with the system. They have an E1 grinder that was packed with grease. According to Eric, there is a grease separator at Wendy's that may or may not have been being maintained, however after discussing with Wendy's staff, the separator is now on a cleaning schedule. Hopefully that will alleviate the problem. Time will tell. Eric wasn't sure of the number, but the recent grab sample result for BOD was astronomical and he will make note in the comments section of this month's DMR.
