1/20/2023 RE: Tank inspections External Inbox Jolly, Bob 9:32 AM (2 minutes ago) to me Thanks for this information Janet. Bob From: Gastineau, Janet <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 20, 2023 9:03 AM To: Jolly, Bob <[email protected]> Subject: Re: Tank inspections CAUTION: This email originated from outside of DMWW. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. The Iowa DNR does not have any requirements for finished water storage cleaning or inspecting. Generally we recommend every 2-3 years. DMWW had a less frequent schedule based on observations of the structures' needs (at least for cleaning). We accepted that as long as sanitary defects identified in the inspection reports from the contractors were promptly addressed. EPA has the following recommendations from the 1990s, but recently modified these statements to say water systems must thoroughly inspect the inside of their tanks every three to five years. Of late, EPA has been taking a pretty strong stance on more frequent storage cleaning and inspecting; they believe failure of best practices, breaches, sediment buildup and infrequent washout events can lead to a waterborne disease outbreak. I am finding conflicting information in our files and was wondering if you or someone from DNR could point me in the right direct with respect to DNR inspection, cleaning, and frequency requirements.
