11/10/2021 On 11/10/2021 Mr. Shumaker contacted the Field Office to discuss the requirement for hardness (maintain at or below 36 mg/L) outlined in the operation permit. Mr. Shumaker started by explaining the facility was using a test kit that measured hardness in grain/gallon. We discussed the conversion factor (1 grain = 17.1 ppm). Mr. Shumaker indicated that they were getting numbers anywhere from 18 gpg (307.8 ppm) & up. Based on the conversion rate, they could never meet this limit. In addition, this was a very low limit for hardness. Mr. Shumaker was informed they would need to discuss the situation with Water Supply Engineering. It was explained that the requirement was set by Water Supply to help maintain Radium. It was mentioned that permits have a blend ratio of unsoftened water with softened water to achieve the desired results. Mr. Shumaker indicated he was not aware of any blending. In summary, Mr. Shumaker was directed to water supply engineering to discuss the requirement and possibly get it changed. He was provided instructions on where to look for the staff roster for water supply on the DNR website. As the call concluded, Mr. Shumaker indicated he would call engineering. MARK HEIDERSCHEIT
