10/28/2020 Emerson, a neighbor Chamness's compost site, called asking what the plan is to stop the smoke and odor from the smoldering compost pile. He said when the wind is blowing the odor toward his house it's almost unbearable. I explained that their main priority to get the site back into compliance (reestablishing windrows) is to process through the very old piles, mixing with new incoming wetter waste streams and in doing so, they're exposing hot spots that tend to catch on fire. As they come across these hot spots, they try to either dig them out, cover with wet material or spray with water. I explained that they're gaining on it, as is evidenced by the pad being impassable earlier this year and now they have drainage and drivable lanes throughout the pad.....but it's taking time.
