12/7/2009 Karla: Your plan appears acceptable. I suggest you coordinate this CP installation with the next scheduled CP test for your tanks (testing is required every three years). The life of galvanic anodes are highly dependent upon the resistivity of the ground (backfill) surrounding the structure. I think you should look at your past tank CP test results before deciding to install an impressed current system. If your tanks are well protected, then the tank appurtenances could get by with galvanic systems too. This would be less expensive than an impressed current system. If the results are marginal, then an impressed current system for the entire tank system is probably appropriate. Apparently I exceeded the (very short) time limit. I am working with our Facilities staff on responding to the NCAH UST inspections that occurred in October and November. One of the items that required action was a plan for cathodic protection of the piping sumps for the NADC 30,000-gallon tanks. The tanks currently have galvanic protection. Since galvanic protection lifespan is generally 15-20 years and the tanks were installed in 1991, we were going to start budgeting for impressed current cathodic protection of the tanks. We would like to include the piping sumps in the project for the tanks. The current plan is to budget for this project in FY 2011 which would mean the cathodic protection system would be procured by September 30, 2012. Is that timeline adequate as a response to the UST inspection? In the meantime, we have developed a monthly UST checklist that will allow us more closely monitor and address water in the sumps. The checklist will be included with the official UST inspection response. If this timeline is not sufficient for addressing cathodic protection in the piping sumps, please let me know what timeline would meet expectations. I will be out of the office next week, but I will be checking my e-mail on a regular basis. Thank you for your response.
