7/3/2019 In response to an email from Environmental Specialist Wendy Wittrock, I called Sapp Bros WW Operator Eric Cherko on 7/3/2019. Several businesses at the I29 Percival exit have grinder pumps that send wastewater to Sapp Bros' 3-cell aerated lagoon, which discharges to a basin. Sampling and effluent flow for permit limits are monitored between the lagoon and the basin so the basin acts as their receiving stream. But, most of the time, the basin does not discharge and the wastewater just sits or soaks away. Per Mr. Cherko, flow from the lagoon to the basin was shut off prior to the flood and the valve has not been opened yet. Also per Mr. Cherko, while flood waters did not overtop the actual lagoon cells, they did inundate the basin and fill it in with silt. Mr. Cherko wanted to pump off the water and remove silt from the basin before opening the discharge valve from the lagoons. I agreed that the silt could be removed from the basin and handled as silt deposited by the flood. I also suggested that it should still be tested for nutrients before being spread on cropland.
