6/6/2019 FYI--more temp water services/mains Gastineau, Janet <[email protected]> Attachments 1:36 PM (0 minutes ago) to Mark, Gabe John Lins telephoned today looking for some concurrence on a concern he has with providing water to event-goers in water works park. He raises the following, timely issue that I wanted to make you aware of. Des Moines Water Works provides water stations at public events. John designed them and while they only have a couple to provide, they include metering and backflow prevention and are connected to a hydrant. Event-goers can fill up water bottles at these stations. However, more and more John has been seeing thousands of feet of pex pipe connected to these stations and then distributed to multiple locations at campgrounds and other locations where significant numbers of people congregate, primarily at water works park. He is having strong reservations about this, naturally. I told him what our position is and told him the authority to allow this or not ultimately lies with DMWW. This one is tricky, like the one is Urbandale where it was merely a hose connection to a hydrant providing water to two homes (photos attached), because of the need to distinguish between temporary water main and water services. John essentially considers what he's witnessed and described to me as its own distribution system, in which case Des Moines Water Works will have to make some internal decisions as to whether it's allowed or whether to go with the disinfection and TCR sampling route. However, he's also very concerned about the potential contamination that just comes along with dirty hands and dirty bottles using these extended lines. We didn't come to any conclusions/solutions, but I wanted you to be aware as it fits right in with previous discussions on temp water mains. JANET GASTINEAU
