3/6/2019 On Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at 8:34 AM Brian Stump with Des Moines Water Works called to inform me they issued a boil advisory for a single residence at 4726 E. Sheridan Avenue. This is a new home and the owner called in a complaint about the water quality shortly after they moved in. The complaint was about the water having a funny sulfur smell. Des Moines Water Works investigated and collected bacterial samples at the residence of the complaint, two homes at E 48th St., one at E 50th St. and a sample from a dead end hydrant in the area. This is an area of new development and the complainant's house is the only one currently on this street. The other homes sampled are part of the development as well. Des Moines Water Works also found a valve that was closed that would have allowed water to loop through the system. Because the valve was closed the water was going up a long dead end with little usage. All of the sample locations with the exception of the complainant's house were absent of bacteria but the complainant's house was positive for total coliform. Des Moines Water Works flushed the main(s) and took a second sample at the hydrant which came back as absent of bacteria. They are issuing a boil advisory for the single residence at 4726 E Sheridan Avenue (location of the complaint) and they are going to flush the plumbing in the house and collect two bacterial samples from the residence (one day apart) and another bacterial sample at the hydrant. Once they get two consecutive samples at the residence that are absent of bacterial they will lift the boil advisory. They are also going to open the closed valve to allow water to loop through the area. BILL GIBBONS
