5/2/2018	Dave Wittry at AMVC called to report that a fire destroyed the farrowing barn(s) and part of the gestation barns at Taurus Sow in Union County. They believe that the fire was caused by a lightening strike. Dave was not at the site yet but estimated 600 to 800 dead sows in the farrowing barn(s) and an equal or greater number in the gestation barns. Taurus Sow composts their routine mortalities but, due to the large number, they contacted a renderer to pick up as many of the dead pigs as they will take. The facility plans to compost any carcasses rejected by the renderer onsite. Solid waste rules would allow the confinement barns to be buried onsite but would require an inspection and the removal of all asbestos prior to burial. I provided Dave with contact info for Tom Wuehr and Nathan Stueve to ask about the asbestos requirements.	DAN OLSON
