The indicated location of this event has been estimated.
Highlighted river segments indicate those impacted in part or whole by this fish kill event. It is not meant to represent the actual extent of the kill.
Waste was spilled while being pumped from a hog confinement operation in the NW corner of sec 1 in Sweetland twsp. Spill occurred sometime between Oct 25-27. Restitution received in 2000. Confinement operator vague on details he gave the EPD, so fisheries is not sure how much was spilled, but it was a significant amount. This remote section of Pine Creek holds a lot of water due to a long series of at least 5-6 beaver dams. This may have delayed downstream effects. Systematic sampling of kill not able to include a riffle, which contained a majority of the dead darters seen, and the bend above the riffle contained a deep hole in which the majority of the largemouth bass were found (wintering area?). Due to lapse in time between spill and investigation, these figures greatly underestimate the value of the loss.
