Onsite Comments

[the following information is from Donna Lutz, coordinator of the Des Moines River WQ monitoring network, ISU]: Weather conditions prior to kill were hot and humid with little precipitation. By August 15, little evidence of a kill was noted. Three large dead carp were found floating in shallows near cabins at Cordova Park. A dead white bass (15") was floating in the lake between Cordova Park and Whitebreast Bay, and a dead carpsucker (18") was found floating off the Whitebreast swimming beach. Skeletal remains of several fish, including two channel catfish were found at the boat ramp nearest the cabins. The Corps had also notified Dick McWilliams (DNR-Fisheries Management) of the kill. The cause of the kill is not known. A bacterial infection would be suspected if only catfish were affected; however, several other species were noted.
