Onsite Comments

Unknown causes. A fisherman reported 3 days prior that there were dead fish near the Irvington pits access on the East Fork of the Des Moines River. The stretch of river impacted is in Cresco Twp Section 36 , Kossuth County. Conservation Officer Virginia Schulte and Fisheries Biologist Scott Grummer have been on scene working with FO 2 staff. Whatever was released to the river caused a significant decrease in oxygen levels which most likely caused the kill. It was reported that the river was an odd color green and there was and odor of chlorine or chemicals. No source has yet been determined.

No ammonia present which means manure is most likely not the cause.
