Onsite Comments

The water in the pool formed by the top of the fishpond by the creek was black in color with a scummy appearance. A strong odor of manure was present. Field testing of the water in the pooled area of the creek indicated pH 7.5, DO 8 ppm, NH3 3+ ppm. and 20 degrees C. Water inside the pond on the other side of the dike had similar readings except temperature which was 5 degrees warmer.

Jeff Schmitt farm has two manure lagoons handling hog manure from a confinement building and barn. The north lagoon had overflowed during a 4.5 inch rain July 5, 1993.
