Highlighted river segments indicate those impacted in part or whole by this fish kill event. It is not meant to represent the actual extent of the kill.
Location: The fish kill occurred in Crane Creek in Section 16, 21, 28, 33, and 34 of T91N, R12W, Bremer County and section 3 T90N, R12W Black Hawk County. The length of stream assessed for fish kill was 4.7 miles (24,825 feet). Fish Kill stream segment upstream coordinate = 42.6864, -92.2674 and downstream coordinate = 42.6414,-92.2557.
Cause of Kill: Unknown. Stream flows were low and water was clear, with no unusual odors (other than decomposing organisms). Characteristics of this kill were consistent with toxicity from a pollutant having aspecific gravity greater than water. Large-bodied fish and fish associated with deeper pools comprised most of the kill while dead small-bodied fish (other than darters) were largely absent from the kill. There were no signs of high water flows and fish were primarily found in the wetted perimeter of the stream (few fish were found on the banks of the stream).
