Field Office 2 was notified of a fish kill at Snell-Crawford Park in Soldier Creek in Fort Dodge late Sunday afternoon. Investigation on Monday found dead fish in the park area that was likely due to low dissolved oxygen in the water at the park. The creek has very low flow currently so fall plant debris breaking down in the water is not being flushed out of the park area, leading to almost stagnant water conditions. The water appears black and has a slight film floating on it currently so it may be seen by the public and further reported as contamination.
Although it is a limited area affected, due to the high visibility of the dead fish in the park and the dark appearance of the water likely not changing until a significant flushing event in the creek, a press release may be warranted.
