Onsite Comments

The observed fish kill at Lake Orient would be considered natural and will have minor impacts to the fish population. I observed between 500 and 1000 dead Largemouth Bass and Bluegill. Lake Orient has a history of fish kills related to hypereutrophic conditions. Summer algae blooms are common, causing wide fluctuations in dissolved oxygen. This appears to be the cause of this event. Last spring I investigated winterkill following ice out at Lake Orient. These events are not complete and given time the fish population will recover.
