Assessment Summary

The presumptive Class BWW1 use remains assessed as "not supported" due to multiple fish kill investigations. All other designated uses were "not assessed."

Assessment Explanation

Presumptive Class A1 - No Data

Presumptive Class BWW1 - Fish kill Assessment:

The presumptive Class BWW1 use assessment based on the 2000 and 2009 fish kills placed this segment in Category 5b. The fish kills were caused by a “pollutant” or was suspected to be caused by a “pollutant”; therefore, the presumptive Class BWW1 use was considered impaired. Because the source of the pollutant was not identified and/or the enforcement actions taken against the responsible party have not been resolved, the presumptive Class BWW1 use was placed in Category 5b. Due to uncertainty regarding the recovery of the aquatic life following the fish kill, any existing fish kill 5b impairment will remain in Category 5b until more recent sampling has shown recovery of the aquatic community or the responsible parties have paid restitution.

Details about the 2009 fish kill can be found here: https://programs.iowadnr.gov/fishkill/Events/800

Details about the 2000 fish kill can be found here: https://programs.iowadnr.gov/fishkill/Events/459

This stream segment’s fish community was sampled in 2013, as part of the DNR Watershed Improvement and Water Monitoring sections’ fish kill follow up monitoring program. Results of this sampling show that this stream supports approximately 1,630 fish per mile compared to the Level IV ecoregion 47c average of approximately 1,710 fish per mile; 64% of the expected fish taxa for this ecoregion were sampled. For detailed results of this sampling, see fish sampling data. The results from this follow-up sampling and comparison of these results to ecoregion averages suggest that the fish community of this stream segment fails to meet expectations for the non-fish kill impacted streams. These results suggest that the stream has not recovered from the previous fish kill events.
