Fishing Forecast

2009 Tandem Hoop Net Assessment – Tandem hoop net sampling was conducted from Sept. 8th – 14th, 2009 to assess the fish population of Schmerse with emphasis on channel catfish. A total of 17 channel catfish where caught for a catch rate of 3 fish per series. This low catch rate suggests a limited numbers of channel catfish in Schmerse. Due to the small sample size, a general assessment of the channel catfish population of Schmerse will be made. A PSD (proportional size density) of 100 reflects a channel catfish population that will be very attractive to the serious channnel catfish angler. Quality (16- to 23.9-inch) and preferred (> 24-inch) size fish dominated the total channel catfish catch representing 82 and 18 percent of the catch respectively. No stock (11- to 15.9-inch) size catfish were sampled due to the lack of stocking of cage catfish the past three years. Relative weight, an indice used to indicate body condition, was 105 (95 – 105 target range) showing fish in excellent body condition. Bluegills where also sampled in good numbers during the 2009 tandem hoop net assessment. A total of 52 bluegill where sampled for a catch rate of 9 fish per series. A PSD value of 65 suggests good numbers of angler acceptable size fish which will be attractive to the serious bluegill angler. Stock (3- to 5.9-inch) size fish comprised 35 percent of the total bluegill catch suggesting good recruitment of the bluegill population of Schmerse. Bullhead (17), northern pike (4), yellow perch (3) and orangespot (1) were also sampled during the 2009 tandem hoop net assessment. (2009)

Consumption Guidelines

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones. Most contaminants accumulate in larger, older fish. For additional information, check out our resources for eating and cooking Iowa caught fish.
