Little Sioux Park boasts very clear water, which can make fishing difficult. In spring, fish for bluegill in the northeast end of the lake and look for nests. Bluegills are commonly 7.5- to 8-inches. Later in the year drift fish the main body of the lake in deeper water. The largemouth bass population is fair. Most bass are sub-legal size, but a few larger fish can be found once in a while. Channel catfish are numerous, but their body condition isn't great. Channel catfish stockings have been reduced to improve the body condition of the catfish already in the lake.(2017)
In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones. Most contaminants accumulate in larger, older fish. For additional information, check out our resources for eating and cooking Iowa caught fish.
