A fishery survey in 2019 of both ponds in Loupee Park found Largemouth Bass, Bluegills, and Black and White Crappies. The bass were mostly 8- to 11-inches, but decent numbers of 14.5- to 18.5 inch fish were also seen. The South pond has the higher chance of catching a large bass. The bluegills were mostly 6- to 7.5-inches with the North pond offering the best size. Crappies were surveyed in low numbers, but size was good with 9 inches the most likely catch. A 12 inch crappie was sampled.(2019)
In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones. Most contaminants accumulate in larger, older fish. For additional information, check out our resources for eating and cooking Iowa caught fish.
