Fishing Report

Most Mount Ayr district lakes have variable ice conditions ranging from 0 to 6 inches. Areas of lakes that were open last week have refroze, but may have thin ice. Warm weather is expected this weekend which could deteriorate ice conditions. For more information, please contact the Mount Ayr Fisheries office at 641-931-6031.
Geese are keeping an area open near the campground which is expanding southward.
Bluegill - Slow: Try using jigs tipped with a waxworm fished near deep cedar tree brushpiles off the beach boat ramp.

Fishing Forecast

Spring electrofishing indicated a moderate density of Largemouth Bass up to 20 inches. There are good numbers of Bluegill in the 6-8 inch length range and Crappie in the 8-10 inch length range.(2024)

Consumption Guidelines

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones. Most contaminants accumulate in larger, older fish. For additional information, check out our resources for eating and cooking Iowa caught fish.
