Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones. Management

  • 2023 - Fish Kills-Winterkill: Inspected a natural winterkill after ice out. Lake was around 3 feet low. Estimated over 1,000 dead largemouth bass, yellow bass, bluegill, channel catfish and crappie. Gizzard shad lined the banks, but were to numerous to count.
  • 2014 - RAFT sampling-RAFT: Collected and prepared fish tissues for RAFT study.
  • 2014 - Fish Kills-Natural Causes: On March 26 Macbride fisheries personnel inspected a natural winter at Cedar Lake in Cedar Rapids. There were around 1,000 fish observed dead on the shorelines after the ice went out. The species consisted of mainly channel catfish, freshwater drum
  • 2010 - RAFT sampling-RAFT: Collected and prepared fish tissues for RAFT study.
  • 2009 - RAFT sampling-RAFT: Collected and prepared fish and turtle tissue for RAFT study
