The fishery in the Atlantic Quarry Pond was evaluated in 2022 when an electrofishing survey was completed. Game fish sampled included largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill and hybrid striped bass. Largemouth bass averaged 11-inches. Hybrid striped bass stocking provides an additional species for anglers to target. Quality sized (12-inches) black crappies were sampled in low numbers. Channel catfish are stocked in the fall during odd numbered years. This pond is connected to the river during flood events and a number of river species are present including gizzard shad, bigmouth buffalo, and common carp.(2022)
In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones. Most contaminants accumulate in larger, older fish. For additional information, check out our resources for eating and cooking Iowa caught fish.
