The Upper Yellow River upstream of Livingood Springs to the west of Old Stage Road contains flows that are intermittent with losing stream sections. There are several tributaries in this section that hold the potential for cool water species such as Smallmouth Bass to develop. The river below Livingood Springs and east or downstream of Old Stage Road is cold water and able to sustain an excellent put and grow Brown and Rainbow Trout population. For stocking information, see the Yellow River under the heading Where To Fish, Trout Streams. There are very few public areas on this river. Fishing the Yellow River by canoe or kayak is the only legal means to trout fish without landowner permission.(2016)
In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones. Most contaminants accumulate in larger, older fish. For additional information, check out our resources for eating and cooking Iowa caught fish.
