Consumption Guidelines

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones. Most contaminants accumulate in larger, older fish. For additional information, check out our resources for eating and cooking Iowa caught fish.

Stocking

  • 9/29/23 - 1,796 Largemouth Bass (3.6)
  • 9/28/23 - 11,000 Bluegill (2.5)

Management

  • 2024 - Structures-Pallets: Numerous pallet structures and cedar tree piles were constructed by a local scout as a part of his Eagle Scout project. The Spirit Lake Management team then aided in the sinking of these structures throughout the pit.
  • 2023 - Fishery Renovation-Chemical-Rotenone: Westport Pond was drawn down by the county engineer's office for gravel operations. DNR and CCB took advantage of the low water condition to renovate the fishery. A small amount of rotenone was needed to complete the renovation
