Fish species available to catch include Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Black Crappie, White Crappie, Channel Catfish, White Bass, Hybrid Striped Bass and Walleye. A fishery survey in 2025 found Largemouth Bass at sizes from 5.5- to 17-inches with most in the 10- to 14-inch sizes. Bluegills were surveyed up to 9.2 inches with most of largest fish being 6.5- to 7.5-inches. Black Crappies grow to good sizes with a good group of fish surveyed in the 9- to 10.5-inch range. Channel Catfish are abundant with most fish in the 10- to 16-inch range, but all sizes were found out to 25 inches. - Last updated on 12/22/2025.
In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones.
