Fishing Forecast

Spring electrofishing indicated a good abundance of largemouth bass up to 13 inches. Low numbers of channel catfish were sampled in 2021, but catfish up to 22 inches are available to anglers. Low numbers of crappie were also sampled in 2021 with most crappie in the 8-10 inch length range. Moderate numbers of bluegill were sampled with most bluegill in the 7-8 inch length range.(2021)

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones.   • 2022 - Vegetation-Treatment: Curly-leaf pondweed and Coontail were treated in May with Sonar A.S. (purchased by City of Osceola)
  • 2021 - Survey-Population: A comprehensive fish survey was conducted using spring electrofishing and summer baited hoop nets. Fall fyke netting was not conducted due to excessive abundance of submergent plants (mostly coontail).
  • 2021 - Vegetation-Treatment: Curly-leaf pondweed was treated in April with Aquathol K (purchased by City of Osceola)
  • 2018 - Vegetation-Treatment: 5 gallons of Aquathol-K was applied around the boat ramp and west shoreline area to reduce abundance of curly-leaf pondweed.
  • 2017 - Survey-Population: A standard trend fish population survey was conducted using electrofishing and fyke nets.
  • 2014 - Survey-Population: A fishery comprehensive survey was done with electofishing, hoop netting, and fyke netting gears.
  • 2012 - Survey-Population: A fishery trend survey was done with electofishing and fyke netting gears.
  • 2010 - Survey-Population: Standard sample was done on Grade Lake with electrofishing gear.
