Water temperature is holding right at about 60 degrees. |
Black Crappie - Fair: The crappies still holding at 6 to 7 foot deep water in the flooded timber. Small jigs floated under a small bobber so you can work it real slow. |
Channel Catfish - Fair: Start fishing the face of the dam and off the ends of the jetties, with the heavy rains I would recommend switching to nightcrawlers for bait. |
Bluegill - Fair: The bluegills are starting to work the shallower water as the water continues to warm, the insects are getting more active around the flooded timber in 2 to 3 foot of water. |
A stocking request was submitted to the IDNR hatcheries for largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. The order will be filled in 2009. Additionally, adult black crappie and redear sunfish will be collected from lakes in the area and stocked in Big Hollow Lake following the establishment of the aforementioned species.(2008)
In nearly all cases, Iowa fish are safe to eat. Cleaning and/or preparing the meal causes most of the problems regarding taste or color of fish. Like all living creatures, fish are susceptible to diseases, parasites, and other naturally occurring conditions in the water. If you suspect your fish is affected by any of these conditions, do not eat it. Consider eating smaller and younger fish which usually have lower levels of contaminants than larger ones. Most contaminants accumulate in larger, older fish. For additional information, check out our resources for eating and cooking Iowa caught fish.
