Lake Chubs have a terete body form and are a light gray color on the back and upper sides, shading to silvery below. It is characterized by a prominent barbel at the corner of the large, sub-terminal mouth. Dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins have 8 rays, while the pectoral has 13 to 18. The complete lateral line has 60 to 67 scales. Hooked pharyngeal teeth are usually arranged in a pattern of 2, 4-4, 2. Spawning males show pink around their mouth and at the base of their paired fins, while females also have pink shading at the base of the pectoral fins. Both sexes develop tubercles while breeding.
