A leaking container of a petroleum-based chemical from Keokuk Steel Castings appears to be the source of the spill.Between 5,000 and 7,000 gallons of contaminated water were removed Saturday, and 14 drums full of contaminated soil were removed over the weekend. Press release a week later states: "Cleanup has been completed on Soap Creek, a tributary of the Mississippi River, after a chemical spill last Friday killed all aquatic life in a quarter-mile stretch of the stream."
