Onsite Comments
The fish kill occurred on a tributary to Fourmile Creek within the City of Ankeny in Central Polk County. The impacted reach spanned from North Trilein Drive, downstream to just west of the Interstate 35culvert. The killed reach was 3,489 feet, from 15T 450982 4621463 to 15T 451915 4621310.
Hy-Vee Supermarket, located at 410 N Ankeny Blvd., disposed approximately 800 gallons of milk down a storm drain. The milk traveled through the storm sewer to a tributary to Fourmile Creek. High biological oxygen demand to break down the milk caused low dissolved oxygen in the stream, resulting in the fish kill.
