Stream use assessment.

Basis for Assessment

Used a review of the field sheet of the November 1990 DNR stream use assessment WSW of Newton to upgrade the assessment of support of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses from PS to FST due to (1) presence of a relatively diverse fish community (13 species from 4 families) for streams in the Mississippi River portion of the Southern Iowa Rolling Loess Prairies subecoregion (47f) and (2) presence of nearly all the expected fish taxa (7 of 8) for streams in this subregion.   Thus, despite the frequent channel alterations (primary channelization) noted on the field sheet from the November 1990 stream use assessment, and noted at other locations observed on the day of this assessment, this stream supports a fish community that exceeds the expectation of Class B(LR) streams in this subregion.   The data upon which this assessment is based are more than 5 years old.   Additional monitoring is needed to update this assessment.
