Assessment Summary

The Class A1 use was assessed as “not supported” due to aesthetically objectionable conditions caused by algae blooms, by poor water clarity due mainly to non-algal turbidity, and due to violations of the state's criteria for indicator bacteria. Violations of the Class A1 and BLW criterion for pH also contributed to the impairment of Class A1 use at this lake. The Class BLW use was assessed (monitored) as “not supported” due to violations of the state’s pH criterion and impacts of nutrients and sediment at this lake. The Class C use was "fully supported." All other designated uses were “not assessed.” Note: A TMDL for siltation and nutrients at Lake Darling was prepared by DNR and approved by EPA in 2003. Because, however, the Section 303(d) impairment due to indicator bacteria (aka, pathogens) was not addressed in the TMDL, this waterbody is placed in IR Category 5a (impaired; TMDL required) for the current assessment/listing cycle.

According to DNR's methodology, a lake must meet water quality standards for two consecutive cycles to suggest de-listing. Therefore, Lake Darling will remain listed for the 2022 cycle as "not supported" its Class A1 use due to pH.

Although the index value for Chlorophyll a is below the impairment trigger of 65 for this assessment cycle, the Class A1 use of Lake Darling remains "not supported" due to aesthetically objectionable conditions. Based on DNR's methodology, the median TSI value for Chlorophyll a must be 63 or less for two consecutive assessment/listing cycles before a lake can be removed from the state's Section 303(d) list (IR Category 5). Therefore, Lake Darling will remain listed as "not supported" for the 2022 assessment/listing cycle.
