Stream use assessment.

Basis for Assessment

Used a review of the field sheets from the three October 1990 DNR stream use assessments in Van Buren and Jefferson counties to continue to assess support of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses as FST due to (1) presence of moderately diverse fish communities at all locations (species/families, dstr->upstr: 10/6; 12/4; 9/4) for streams in the Central Irregular Plains ecoregion (40), (2) presence of a majority of the expected fish taxa at all assessment sites (6 of 8; 7 of 8; 5 of 8) for streams in this ecoregion, and (3) indications on field sheets of relatively good to very good habitat quality in this waterbody segment.   Based on field sheets, the primary threats to the continued support of the Class B(LR) uses are frequent areas of channel alterations (prmarily channel straightening) and streambank erosion, especially in the upstream reaches in Jefferson County.   The data upon which this assessment is based are more than 5 years old.   Additional monitoring is needed to update the assessment and to determine the status of the aquatic communities and habitats.
