Assessment Comments

Stream use assessment in 1992.

Basis for Assessment

Used a review of the field sheet from the October 1992 DNR stream use assessment in Jasper County to upgrade the assessment of support of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses from PS to FST due to presence of a majority of the expected fish taxa (5 of 8) for streams in the Mississippi River portion of the Souther Iowa Rolling Loess Prairies subecoregion.   Fish community diversity (7 species from 2 families) is relatively low for this subregion, and habitat quality is well-below average (see above assessment for the 1996 report).   Presence of a majority of the expected fish taxa, however, suggest that the Class B(LR) uses are fully supported, with threats to this support from extensive channel alterations, and from unstable eroding stream banks.  Addtional monitoring is needed to better define the status of the aquatic communities.
