Assessment Comments

Assessment based on results of the three water quality studies conducted by GZA Geoenvironmental for Holnam, Inc. Portland Cement Company.

Basis for Assessment

Used results of the three water quality studies conducted by GZA Geoenvironmental for Holnam, Inc.  Portland Cement Company (a fourth study was conducted in 1992) to change the assessment of support of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses from PS to FST due to results of both analysis for chemical water quality and for aquatic life (fish and benthic macro- inverts) that suggest improving water quality since 1992 and especially since the UHL study in 1984.   Minor increases in total dissolved solids and soluble salts are not believed to impair water quality, and continued discharge from Holnam's West Quarry Treatment system is not believed to present a threat to water quality or biota in Calmus Creek.
