Assessment Comments

Assessment is based on results of (1) USGS/NAWQA water quality monitoring near Powersville from 1996-98 and (2) IDNR-UHL monitoring in 2000-01.

Basis for Assessment

SUMMARY:  The Class B(LR) aquatic life uses remain assessed as "fully supported / threatened;" the fish consumption uses are "not assessed."  EXPLANATION:  The assessments of support of beneficial uses remain based primarily on results of water quality monitoring conducted on Flood Creek near Powersville (Floyd County) from March 1996 to September 1998 by USGS as part of the National Water Quality Assessment Program (NAWQA) (eastern Iowa river basins study unit, station 05461390) (see assessment for the 2000 report above).   Results of monitoring conducted near Greene in from October 2000 to September 2001 as part of the IDNR ambient monitoring network (station 10340002) show no violations of Class B(LR) water quality criteria for conventional parameters and ammonia-nitrogen in the seven monthly samples collected or for pesticides in the 4 samples analyzed (this station was dropped from the IDNR ambient monitoring network in 2001 due to re-occurrence of no flow conditions).   This limited monitoring is consistent with the assessment of aquatic life uses as "fully supported."  Fish consumption uses are "not assessed" because (1) data used for the previous assessment (see 1998 assessment above) are now considered too old (greater than five years) for characterizing current water quality conditions and (2) support of fish consumption uses is not assessed for Class B(LR) streams.
