Assessment Comments
Stream use assessment in Poweshiek County.
Basis for Assessment
Used a review of the field sheet from the June 1990 DNR stream use assessment in Poweshiek County to continue to assess support of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses as PS due to (1) relatively low fish community diversity (approx 6, all cyprinids) for streams in the Southern Iowa Rolling Loess Prairies (47f) and (2) indications on field sheet of somewhat below average quality of aquatic habitats and riparian conditions due to extensive channel alterations (unspecified). Although a majority of the expected fish taxa (5 of 8) for this subregion were captured, the lack of species other than cyprinids plus the indications of habitat impacts justify follow-up monitoring to better define the status of the aquatic communities and to define the degree to which the Class B(LR) uses may be impaired. The data upon which this assessment is based are over 5 years old; thus, the 305(b) assessment category is "evaluated.
