Assessment Comments

Assessment based on 2007 IDNR/UHL biological monitoring data: BMIBI = 85 (excellent) or coldwater biological indicators = 3/4. Both the warm and cold water assessments suggest full support.

Basis for Assessment

Note:  Prior to the 2008 Section 305(b) cycle, this stream segment was classified only for general uses.   Due to changes in Iowa’s surface water classification that were approved by U.S.  EPA in February 2008 (see http://www.iowadnr.com/water/standards/files/06mar_swc.pdf), this segment is now presumptively designated for Class A1 (primary contact recreation) uses and for Class B(WW1) aquatic life uses.   According to the Iowa Water Quality Standards, all perennial rivers and streams and all intermittent streams with perennial pools that are not specifically listed in the Iowa surface water classification are designated as Class A1 and Class B(WW1) waters.   Thus, for the current (2010) assessment, the available water quality monitoring data will be compared to the applicable Class A1 and Class B(WW1) water quality criteria.   This waterbody had not been assessed for Section 305(b)/303(d) purposes prior to the 2008 assessment/listing cycle.]

SUMMARY:  The presumptive Class A1 (primary contact recreation) uses are "not assessed" due to the lack of information upon which to base an assessment.    The presumptive Class B(WW1) aquatic life uses are assessed (evaluated) as "fully supported" based on results of IDNR/UHL biological monitoring in 2007.

EXPLANATION:  The assessment of the presumptive Class B(WW1) aquatic life uses remains based on data collected in 2007 as part of the IDNR/UHL stream REMAP project.    A series of biological metrics which reflect stream water quality and habitat integrity were calculated from the biocriteria sampling data.    The biological metrics are based on the numbers and types of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa and fish species that were collected in the stream sampling reach.    The biological metrics were combined to make a fish community index of biotic integrity (FIBI) and a benthic macroinvertebrate index (BMIBI).    The indexes rank the biological integrity of a stream sampling reach on a rising scale from 0 (minimum) to 100 (maximum).    The 2007 BMIBI score was 85 (excellent) and fish where not collected.   The aquatic life use support was assessed (evaluated) as fully supporting (=FS), based on a comparison of the FIBI score with biological impairment criteria (BIC) established from a statistical analysis of data collected at stream ecoregion reference sites from 1994-2004.   The BMIBI BIC for this ecoregion is 61.    Even though this site passed the BMIBI BIC, it is uncertain as to whether or not this segment is meeting the aquatic life criteria because it is a small headwater stream and doesn’t fall in the calibrated watershed size.

The 2007 sampling data suggest that this stream is a coldwater stream.   However, until a Use Attainability Assessment can be completed, the presumptive designated uses for this stream are Class A1 (primary contact recreation) and Class B(WW1) aquatic life.   Below you will find the cold water assessment for this segment.

A series of four (4) coldwater biological indicators, which reflect stream water quality and habitat integrity, were calculated from the biocriteria sampling data.    The coldwater biological indicators are based on the numbers and types of coldwater benthic macroinvertebrate taxa that were collected the stream sampling reach.    Sites that do not receive any type of trout stocking are scored on the benthic macroinvertebrate data only.   Non-trout stocking sites that score 3 or 4 are Fully Supporting (FS), sites that score 1 or 2 are Partially Supporting (PS), and sites that score 0 are Not Supporting (NS).   The 2007 coldwater biological indicator score was 3/4.    The aquatic life use support was assessed (evaluated) as fully supporting (=FS), based on a comparison of the coldwater biological indicator score with biological assessment criteria established for this Section 305(b) report.   The coldwater biological indicators were determined from a statistical analysis of data collected at coldwater stream ecoregion reference sites from 1994-2008 and with assistance from the IDNR Fisheries Bureau.

This aquatic life assessment is now considered "evaluated" based on a change in the 2010 IDNR assessment methodology.   IDNR now requires a segment have two or more biological samples collected from the segment in multiple years between 2004 and 2008 to be considered “monitored”.   This segment had a single sample collected in 2007.   Despite this change in assessment methodology and type, this waterbody was placed in IR Category 2a.
