Assessment Comments
Assesment is based on results of U.S. EPA/IDNR fish tissue (RAFT) monitoring.
Basis for Assessment
SUMMARY: The general aquatic life uses were not assessed. Fish consumption uses remain assessed as "not supporting." Other beneficial uses of this "general use" lake were not assessed. EXPLANATION: A fish kill occurred on Cedar Lake on April 24, 1997 (see assessment for the 1998 and 2000 reports above). According to DNR's assessment methodology for Section 305(b) reporting, due to the lack of a fish kill in this waterbody over the last three years, the previous (2000) level of support of the general aquatic life uses ("partially supported") is no longer applicable. Because other data are not available to develop an assessment of support of the general aquatic life uses, these uses are considered "not assessed." Results of EPA/DNR fish tissue (RAFT) monitoring in 2000 showed that levels of technical chlordane in composite samples of fillets of common carp and channel catfish were below the FDA action level of 0.30 ppm. The samples of common carp fillets contained 0.073 ppm; the sample of channel catfish fillets contained 0.250 ppm of technical chlordane. No other contaminants approached either 1/2 of the respective FDA action levels or IDNR's levels of concern. Due, however,to the continued existence of the fish consumption advisory for this lake, the fish consumption uses remain assessed as "not supporting." This lake will be again monitored as part of the EPA/DNR fish tissue monitoring program in 2002. If levels of technical chlordane are again below FDA action levels, IDNR will investigate the possiblity of lifting the fish consumption advisory for this lake.
