Assessment Comments

Five stream use assessments in Benton and Linn counties.

Basis for Assessment

Used results of the five DNR stream use assessments conducted in 1990 and 1991 to assess the B(LR) aquatic life uses as FST due to (1) habitat scores consistently better than the overall average for DNR stream use assessments, (2) field notes that suggest suggest above average habitat quality, (3) relatively low fish scores (8-12) likely due to collection during cold weather (November 1990) and to large amount of snags at sites sampled in July 1991, (4) three fish collections made by DNR staff (Olson and Howell) in April 1990 as part of the 1990 Iowa Natural History Foray; from 11-12 fish species were collected at sites near Norway, Watkins, and Keystone.   The drainage basin of this stream is a moderately erosive agricultural area (DEQ-DSC 1979), and the aquatic life uses designated for this stream are significantly threatened by NPS runoff from rowcrop areas.
