Stream use assessment in Jones County.

Basis for Assessment

Used a review of the September 1991 DNR stream use assessment in Jones County to continue to assess support of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses as PS due to (1) presence of less than a majority of the expected fish taxa (4 of 9) for streams in the Southern Iowa Rolling Loess Prairies subecoregion (47f) and (2) due to indications of below average habitat quality due to general lack of substrate diversity, frequent channel alterations due to channel straightening and pasturing of the riparian zone, and frequent streambank erosion.   Notes on field sheet suggest severe pasturing impacts:  "pastured area very trampled."  The data upon which this assessment is based are more than 5 years old.  Follow-up monitoring is needed to determine the status of the aquatic communities and habitats and to determine the degree to which the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses may be impaired.
