Stream use assessment in Howard County.

Basis for Assessment

Used a review of the field sheets from the August 1990 DNR stream use assessments in Howard County to continue to assess suupport of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses as FST due to indications on field sheets of above average habitats due to diverse substrates and several pool/riffle sequences and due to lack of significant impacts to the physical characteristics of the stream.   Sampling of fish communities was inconclusive, probably due to difficulty seining in presence of aquatic macrophytes:  both locations produced only 5 of the 11 expected fish taxa for Class B(LR) streams in the Iowan Surface subecoregion.   In addition, both assessment sites were near the upstream boundary of the Class B(LR) reach.   Additional monitoring is needed to update this assessment and to better determine the status of the aquatic communities and habitats of this stream reach.
