Assessment Comments

1992 stream use assessment in Allamakee County.

Basis for Assessment

Continued to use assessment of support of the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses developed for the 1994 report (=PS).   Follow-up monitoring is needed to better define the status of the aquatic communities and habitats and to determine to what degree the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses of this stream may be impaired.   A review of the field sheet from the June 1992 DNR stream use assessment shows a fish community with 3 species (all Cyprinids) that lacks a majority of the expected taxa for Class B(LR) streams in the Driftless Area ecoregion.   Results of seining, however, may be low due to presence of many snags and rocks that hindered seining.   The field sheet from the assessment in the general use portion of Paint Creek approximately 2 miles downstream from Waukon had better species richness (8 spp., 2 fams) but the field sheet indicates "cattle dung and odor of something; very warm water" and "worms and sores [on] most fish."  Thus, follow-up monitoring in the upper reaches of Paint Creek is needed.
