Mosquito Creek IA 06-WED-1703
from confluence with Spring Cr. (S9 T78N R41W Harrison Co.) to confluence with Moser Cr. in NW 1/4 S12 T80N R40W Shelby Co.
Assessment Comments
Assessment based on results of a May 1988 IDNR stream use assessment conducted in Harrison/Shelby counties.
Basis for Assessment
Used field notes from the May 1988 DNR stream assessment of Mosquito Creek upstream from Spring Creek to assess the Class B(LR) aquatic life uses as PS due to habitat alterations related to extensive channelization and due to extreme siltation of the stream bed. Fish community of relatively few (4-5) highly turbidity tolerant fish species (e.g., sand shiner, bigmouth shiner, creek chub, fathead minnow). The turbidity-tolerant flathead chub was present in good numbers. In terms of habitat and stream quality, Mosquito Creek is one of the more severely degraded streams I have sampled in Iowa (JRO).
