Assessment Comments
Assessment is based on results of IDNR/UHL biological (biocriteria) monitoring in 2000: FIBI = 25 (fair), 18 (poor), 16 (poor); BMIBI = 39, 42, 43 (fair) and 2004 REMAP monitoring: FIBI = 8. FIBI ave = 16.7; BMIBI ave = 41.3. FIBI BIC = 31; BMIBI BIC = 54.
Basis for Assessment
SUMMARY: The Class B(LR) aquatic life uses are assessed (monitored) as "partially supported" based on results of IDNR/UHL biological (biocriteria) sampling at three locations on this stream segment in 2000 and the results from one REMAP site also located on this segment.
EXPLANATION: This assessment was based on data collected in 2000 and 2004 as part of the DNR/UHL stream biocriteria and REMAP projects. A series of biological metrics which reflect stream water quality and habitat integrity were calculated from the biocriteria sampling data. The biological metrics are based on the numbers and types of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa and fish species that were collected in the stream sampling reach. The biological metrics were combined to make a fish community index of biotic integrity (F-IBI) and a benthic macroinvertebrate index (BM-IBI). The indexes rank the biological integrity of a stream sampling reach on a rising scale from 0 (minimum) to 100 (maximum). The 2000 FIBI scores were 25 (fair), 18 (poor), 16 (poor). The 2000 BMIBI scores were 39, 42, 43 (fair). The 2004 REMAP FIBI score was 8 (poor) and the BMIBI score could not be calculated. The FIBI average was 16.7 and the BMIBI average was 41.3. The aquatic life use support was assessed as partially supporting (= PS) based on a comparison of the FIBI and BMIBI scores with biological impairment criteria (BIC) established for previous Section 305(b) reports. The biological impairment criteria were determined from a statistical analysis of data collected at stream ecoregion reference sites from 1994-2004. The FIBI BIC for this ecoregion is 31 and the BMIBI BIC for this ecoregion is 54.
